Why is the substation important?
Overview
Electricity is generated from power plants. The power plants are located far away from the residential or end-user sites, due to various reasons like environmental hazards, safety purposes, prevention of pollution, etc and power plants can be kilometers and miles away from the users and to minimize the electrical losses, power generated from power plants is stepped up first (transmission stage). This is because losses occur less in high voltages and they can then travel longer distances.
The high voltage cannot be directly fed to the consumers. So, it needs to be stepped down then (distribution stage). These stages between power plants and consumers are achieved through a substation.

A substation is nothing but a part of an electrical system that aids in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity. The primary function of a substation is voltage conversion (from low to high or high to low).
